Cheap alternative fuels

Arguably, no commodity has caused so much benefit and so much damage to humankind than fossil fuel. It is a major contributor to global warming and is causing so much serious damage to the planet yet, at the same time, so much of the world’s economy hinges on fossil fuel. What’s more, it’s quickly running out. Not only is this resulting in exorbitant fuel prices, but economists predict that the effects could be a lot more drastic than that if fossil fuel runs out – probably even resulting in another great depression, an economic depression even more severe than the Great Depression in the first half of the 20th century. Now that’s something to be worried about. It is therefore crucial that we find a cheap, renewable and green source of fuel. There are lots of different propositions for fossil fuel alternatives out there, I’ll be canvassing the ones I view as most feasible: biodiesel, electricity and water.

Biodiesel

The beauty of biodiesel is that it’s produced from plants, meaning that you can make it at home. All you need is some alcohol, lye, water and any plant or vegetable oil you can find or produce. You can even reuse the vegetable oil you’ve already cooked with. Before you use the vegetable oil to make biodiesel, first you need to filter it, then mix it with lye and alcohol while heating it. Finally, you siphon the layer of biodesiel off the top of the mixture. Easy is as easy does.

The electric car

The obvious benefits of an electric car is that they’re rechargeable, meaning that you’ll save a lot of money on gas. Of course, for every benefit there’s a trade-off, in this case the trade-off is that electric cars don’t go as fast as ordinary fossil-fuel driven cars. Moreover, you’ll only be able to drive a hundred miles before the charge runs out. However, some might argue it’s a relatively small trade-off for its eco-friendliness and cheaper running cost.

Using water as a fuel

Looking for a cheap way to improve your gas mileage? I don't blame you, especially when considering the rapidly increasing fuel prices with no end in sight. Clearly, some drastic changes need to be made. Well, you can make this drastic change and use water as a fuel. Doing this is easy and affordable, requiring around only $60 worth of raw materials that you can buy from your local hardware store. I know, I know, it seems impossible, right? Rest assured, such a thing is possible. Of course, it isn't simply a matter of pouring water into your fuel tank and driving off into the sunset.

How does it work?
You might remember in high school chemistry a process known as electrolysis. That's basically what this method employs to power your car, or rather, create a fuel that can: oxy-hydrogen (a.k.a. brown gas). You might also remember (or maybe not) that when water is electrolyzed, it creates two products: hydrogen and oxy-hydrogen. Hence, you have a renewable source of fuel. In fact, many industries today have recognized the power of oxy-hydrogen, using it to wield metal and cut glass, for instance. Now you can to. Furthermore, hydrogen is also combustible. It isn't hard to put two and two together to realize that water is a great source of fuel. Car companies are finally realizing this; Honda is creating a car called the FCX Clarity that uses hydrogen to produce electricity. The beauty of this method is that you don't need to buy a new expensive car to make it work for you.

Using water as a fuel
In order to utilize the power of oxy-hydrogen from water you need to make a few modifications to your car. Don't worry, it won't burn a hole in your pocket and anyone can do it. However, to dispel a common myth, it isn't yet possible to run a car 100% on water based on current technology, you still do need to use a small amount of fossil fuel along with water.

Why should I use water as a fuel?
Aside from the obvious fact that you'll save a lot of money on petrol/gas, you'll also save money on replacement costs for your engine since using water drastically improves an engine's life expectancy. As well as this, you'll also be doing your bit for the environment. It's also pretty easy to implement.
